Wakakoma Shuzo, established in 1860, is the oldest sake brewery in Oyama City, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. The brewery's historic Kura (brewery) has been recognized as a National Tangible Cultural Property, highlighting its cultural significance. Yukihiro Kashiwase, the 6th generation, after training at the famous Yucho Shuzo Sake brewery in Nara Prefecture, returned to the brewery and launched the Wakakoma brand.
Situated near the Omoigawa River and benefiting from the underground waters of the Nikko Mountain Range, Wakakoma Shuzo utilizes these pristine water sources to produce high-quality sake.
The surrounding rice fields further contribute to the brewery's tranquil environment, enhancing the traditional sake-making atmosphere. The brewery's flagship labels include "Wakakoma," featuring a young horse on the label, symbolizing vitality, and "Kanetamaru." These sakes are crafted using traditional methods within the historic kura, preserving the authenticity and heritage of their products. In recent years, Wakakoma Shuzo has balanced tradition with modernity by gradually incorporating new technologies, such as refrigeration systems, to enhance production while maintaining the brewery's historic charm. This blend of old and new has made it a beloved destination for sake enthusiasts. Wakakoma Shuzo brews a diverse range of sake, specially Namasake (unpasteurized sake), being particularly acclaimed for its rich flavor.
