Matsuzaki Shuzoten, established in 1892, is a traditional sake brewery located in Tenei Village, Iwase District, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. The brewery is situated in a serene environment, providing an ideal setting for sake production. The brewery's flagship brand, "Hirotogawa," derives its name from the historical designation of the local Shakadō River. The Kura emphasizes the use of high-quality ingredients, including mineral-rich well water sourced from underground and the premium sake rice "Yume no Ka" cultivated in Fukushima Prefecture. This dedication results in sake that highlights the intrinsic flavors of the rice. Matsuzaki Shuzoten's commitment to quality and tradition has been evident for over a century, meticulously producing the Hirotogawa line of sake that reflects the rich heritage of Fukushima.
The brewery was severely damaged during the destructive earthquake and tsunami in 2011. Not only the buildings suffered from the disaster, they also lost their brew master of many years. With nobody to take over, Mr. Hiroyuki Matsuzaki assumed the responsibility and entered a university program to learn the craft. Now he is the sixth generation to lead his family's brewery and has made it his mission to brew the best sake he can for the community that supported the brewery throughout the years of hardship and his mission of revival.
